Willem de Kooning


Born 1904 and died 1997

His style of work is abstract expressionist also known as action painting, using motion as well as showing motion with brush strokes.

He left school to be work with a commercial artist firm than did night classes at an art and science school in Rotterdam. Which is today its called Willem de Kooning Academie.

In 1926 he was a stowaway on a ship that landed in Virginia. While being in the US he became a house painter and doing commercial art as well.

He helped design murals as being apart of the art union.

He became a full time artist by doing commissions and teaching lessons with out having American citizenship.

Jean-Michel Basquiat

Born 1960 and died 1988

Graffiti culture was a big influence on his work. Hip hop, punk, street as well as being on the lower east side of NYC.

His work is about things going on in the world the deal with social issues as well as political.

He went to an alternative high school where most of the kids who went there were artistic. He did not have a very easy time growing up.

He went from having nothing at all selling a single painting in the matter of a few years.

First American show took place in 1982 at the Annina Nosei gallery where he worked in the basement

He was good friends with Andy.
