5 Things To Do In Ghent NY

I have lived in Ghent my whole life, the lower part of Chatham is Ghent,( its a little confusing) and visited many times. There is not a lot to do here since its small. Here are just a few of the things I would recommend doing in Ghent NY.

There are many farms in Columbia County over all but two of my favorites are Love Apple and Maple Leaf Sugaring. Last year during the farm tour is where I discovered the maple farm. I have known and been to Love Apple many times but never been or heard of a maple farm so close by.

As you may know I am very into art so my next favorite thing to do is go to Art Omi. Which is a sculpture park that has art all over and each section is a diffrent topic. They do add and move things around time to time. They to have programs and events there through out the year and they do have a cafe inside the main building.

One of the town's newest things is the Bartlett House which is a a restaurant/cafe but known for the cafe. The building sat abandon for years and years till 2016 when they did a massive restore. I have been there a few times and there muffins are very good. Most times I drive by its always busy.

Something this town is known for is DQ. Who does not love some ice cream? DQ has been in the town for years and years. Its a staple of the town. You may even during the summer see a tractor or horses in the drive through.

There is a park behind the town hall along the 9 mile run called Siegel-Kline Kill. Theres are walking trails and a cool stream in the back. since your in the country and a horse farm is near by you may see some horses or horse marks. Also theres a grass air field right down the road that does have some events through out the year, but its cool because its a grass field.

There are other things to do during the year, these are just a few things I like.

Mariachi Flor de Toloache

I was asked to come photograph a performance at the new PS21 theater. It was my first time ever going to an event there and my first time in the new space. Its an cool building they but a lot of work into and it shows. There performance was an all female mariachi group which you don't normally hear about, when i think of mariachi I think of a group of guys. you can learn more at the link (here)

Hike #18

Harrier Hill is in Stockport NY and is connected to other parks such as the Greene Port conservation park. Its kind of in the middle of nowhere but still close to the main road. The train tracks are on the bottom of the hill once you get up, you may hear it time to time. When you get to the parking lot you can kind of see a cool view but once you start walking to the main section the view opens up to a panoramic view of the Catskills.

So far  I would have to say this is one of the widest views I have seen.I did not get a chance this time to walk the trails but its cool that they are connected together. A good work out, going back and forth.

Blue Berry Fest 2018

Every year the Austerlitz Historical Society puts on an event and people from all over come to this event from locals to near by states just for the blue berry fest. These photos are to show the over all view of things and birds of prey which were cool to see.

Hike #17

Mount Lebanon Shaker Village is located in New Lebanon which is a bit far from the other hiking areas. There is not much of a hike here just a lot of walking. There are a few buildings that are not open but do have tours that you do do that are a small fee but have to be called in for an appointment. They do have a visitor center there and where you can learn more about the shakers and the village.

If your into local history and how people lived it is interesting to see and learn.  The big stone barn is a big project they are working on which will be restored to how it used to be one of these days.
